THE
GUIDE FOR THE RIVER CETINA
|
|
The water flow in the canyon of the river Cetina
during different seasons (the path underneath Čikota Lađa)
- from
June to October the water flow is 5 - 8 cubic meters per second
- from October
to June the water flow is 12 cubic meters per second, besides the
rainy seasons or the periods when the snow melts when the water
flow increases up to 30 cubic meters per second. The
occasional floods are possible and they amount to 200 cubic meters.
- The water level is regulated by the barrels
therefore it depends on the electric power requirement

STAGES
DESCRIPTION
|
1) Čikota Lađa - Blato na Cetini
Distance length - 6500 m
Altitude difference - 28 m
Summer time
It is possible to descend with a kayaks and canoes. During the
summer time this section of the river is class I difficulty. The rapids
are not continuous or difficult in order to perform the voyage.
Danger to the swimmer is small and self - rescue is simple.
Winter time
Besides kayaks and canoes, descending in rafts up to 8 people is possible.
The rapids during the winter time can be classified as class II difficulty.
Swimmers are rarely injured and they seldom need assistance during
a rescue operation.
2) Blato na Cetini - dam Kraljevac (Zadvarje)
Distance length - 6700 m
Altitude difference - 34 m
Summer time
Descending is possible with
a kayaks and canoes but a guide is mandatory. During the summer period
that part of the river is classified as class II - III difficulty
. From time to time it is necessary to inspect the territory (hidden
rapids and sudden falls). Because of shallow rapids and undercut obstacles
, swimmers must be very careful. Serious injuries are very rare, and
the group assistance may be needed during a rescue operation.
Winter time
Descending is possible with the assistance of an obligatory
guide. During the usual winter time water flow, that part of the river
can be classified as class III - IV difficulty whereas during the
torrent times, the same path becomes of the V - VI class of difficulty
since the latter- mentioned conditions make impossible the potential
emergency evacuation to the shore (steep canyon cliffs of 40 - 80
meters high).Thorough observation is compulsory at this technically
difficult part of the river because of its unapproachable tracks.
The self rescue could be very difficult and the assistance groups
are often needed.
3) Kraljevac dam (Zadvarje) - power station Kraljevac
Distance length - 1600 m
Altitude difference - 110 m
Almost all year long the tourist or extreme canyoning is possible
because the water level is regulated by the dam Kraljevac. But the
kayaks cannot pass through because of the low water level, land configuration,
and the water fall Gubavica ( a cascade 35 + 15 meters). Strong water
flow is very rare and water- level information can be obtained by
government electricity industries.
4) Power station Kraljevac - water falls Studenci
and Oblačnik rapids (Kostanje)
Distance length - 7300 m
Altitude difference - 23 m
Along the entire year it is possible
to descend in a boat up to 8 people. In summer time that part of the
river is class I difficulty whereas it becomes of the class I - II
difficulty in winter time. The level of possible risks for swimmers
is not high whatsoever and the self- rescue is easy. During
the winter time the greatest danger are the water deposits and drifting
wood.
5) Water - falls Studenci and Oblačnik rapids - Radmanove Mlinice
(6 kilometres up the river from Omiš)
Distance length - 5300 m
Altitude difference - 25 m
Summer time
During the summer time Oblačnik rapids
are not accessible to the vessels with the capacity of more than 3
people. In addition, because of undercut rocks the passage is very
dangerous (in these rapids seven accidental deaths occurred) and we strongly recommend to avoid this area. The
remaining route is classified as class II difficulty. The occasional
surveillance is necessary (narrow canals, unnoticeable rapids and
sudden falls). Because of shallow rapids and undermined rocks, swimmers
must be extremely careful.
Winter time
Oblačnik rapids (class III difficulty)
during the winter time are technically very demanding. Even larger
rafts could pass through them but the possible swimmers are endangered
by undercut rocks . Because of its danger we recommend to avoid
these river paths. The remaining
part of this route is class II difficulty. Swimmers must be cautious
and observation is needed. injuries to swimmers are rare, but the
group assistance may be needed. |

Distance
notes:
|
|
- All described distances are in the karst area.
Therefore in many places , along with the obstacles in the water,
we can come across to sudden falls, hidden holes in the river bank,
undercut rocks, caves et. Therefore, we strongly recommend the assistance
of a guide who is familiar with the river (RAFTING CLUB CETINA)
and who can distinguish the inaccessible paths. Extra caution must
be taken when walking or swimming in the river.
